It was time to thaw this Banana out last weekend and so she headed down south for a festival of crazy colors!! Well Utah wasn’t much warmer than Idaho but it was a well needed escape! The ride down was a little crazy and cramped but you can’t complain much when you don’t have a car of your own – you take any opportunity possible. Once in Utah and reunited with my twin Remington, I began my adventures for the weekend!
What is the first thing you do when you live in No-where’s-ville and you reach a civilization with a real choice of restaurants? You hit In-N-Out of course!! This was Katelyn Butler’s first In-N-Out burger ever! Well I couldn’t have that, so I made her repent of her sins and videoed her first bite of heaven :P
After our tummies were satisfied and we couldn’t eat another bite we wandered into the world of imagination, explosions, and …well a little confusion. Sucker Punch was definitely a trip-fest and it took me a while to really determine what was real and what was not. I enjoyed every bit of it despite the somewhat bitter-sweet ending. The movie was a little skewed storyline wise and obvious that the makers just needed a plot where hot chicks could kick butt in a fantasy world, but hey! I like girl’s who kick butt and it was like watching a video game – no complaints there. So we all came out fairly satisfied, ready and excited for the chaos of colors that was awaiting us the next day…
Saturday was the most disorganized day ever, but the best of my weekend. It started with Remington, her roomies, and I driving through insane Utard traffic to reach of the most bizarre area in the state. Everyone knows Utah as “Mormon Land” and no matter which direction you turn you are bound to see an LDS temple. That is why I find this so hilarious… It’s like you are driving on the freeway, turn the bend and then BAM!! The Indian Temple! This was where the Holi Festival or more commonly called the “Festival of Colors” is held. On this day that the festival is held, you would think that some factory is releasing a pollutant into the air since all the sky above the Indian Temple is dyed purple-pink.
The colors are made of a substance I believe is ground chalk, and the point of this festival? Throw it at people! Even strangers! Holi is literally the celebration of spring and togetherness in Indian culture, and while this one in Utah is nothing like what happens in India herself, it was still chaotic and a blast! First before you even set foot on the festival grounds, you’re probably already colored. People leaving the event usually have a little powder left over and they find joy in throwing it at the untouched people walking by. This added anticipation and excitement for the mess I was getting into. Once we had our colors we all became blank canvases for our friends to paint! It was amazing! If you feel you are lacking in a color all you have to do is yell something along the lines of “give me green!” or “Pink! I’m lacking PINK!!!” You are bound to get decorated with the color you request…either from a friend or a stranger! Later I met up with Katie and her friends and we finished the celebration by ordering Indian food. It was a wonderful day!
